NORWICH < > FLANDERS
Echoing narratives of place and heritage through play and architecture, the Norwich Gable presents an interactive journey throughout Norwich city centre uncovering the amazing stories behind some of the most charming buildings around the city in a playful and educational way. This illustrated resource takes the form of an informal walking tour that helps the audience learn about different types of gables, an architectural feature inherited from Dutch immigrantion in the 14th century.
Challenging the use and form of the map as a communication tool, this project looks into the way we explore locality, aiming to spark a dialogue about the role of immigration in history and local identity. Inspired by the biannual flower carpets in Belgium, I work with a contrasting colour palette at the core of this vocabulary. The overlay of shapes and forms is connected to my initial exploration of constructed textiles, that eventually evolved into the visual vocabulary used to create the printed interactive product and woven pieces.
